Essential Tips to Protect Your Identity

Never Share Your OTP Never share your Aadhaar OTP with anyone. In my experience, many fraud attempts start with a simple phone call where someone pretends to be from the Unique Identification Authority of India and asks for an OTP. I always tell people that no genuine authority will ask for your OTP over a call or message.

Avoid Casual Sharing Do not send your Aadhaar copy casually on messaging apps. Many people forward their Aadhaar card photo on WhatsApp or email without thinking. I always advise sharing it only when absolutely necessary and only with trusted institutions.

Use Masked Aadhaar Use Masked Aadhaar whenever possible. When someone asks me for safer ways to share Aadhaar, I usually recommend using Masked Aadhaar because it hides the first eight digits of your Aadhaar number and protects your identity.

Lock Your Biometrics Lock your Aadhaar biometrics when you are not using them. I often suggest people enable the biometric lock feature through mAadhaar so that fingerprints or iris data cannot be misused without their knowledge.

Beware Unknown Websites Avoid sharing Aadhaar on unknown websites. If a random website asks you to upload Aadhaar details, I always recommend checking whether it is officially connected to Unique Identification Authority of India before submitting any information.

Verify the Requester Always verify the identity of the person requesting your Aadhaar. In real situations I have seen people give their Aadhaar copy to individuals who simply claimed to need it. I always advise asking why they need it and how it will be used.

Keep Your Mobile Active Keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile number active. I tell people that their mobile number is important because most Aadhaar authentication alerts and OTPs are sent to that number.

Check Auth History Regularly check your Aadhaar authentication history. If you want to stay aware of how your Aadhaar is being used, I recommend occasionally checking the authentication records available through official Aadhaar services.

No Social Media Posting Avoid posting Aadhaar photos on social media. I have seen cases where people proudly upload their Aadhaar card for verification or documentation proof. I always warn them that this can expose personal details to strangers.

Use Virtual ID Use Virtual ID instead of Aadhaar number when possible. I usually guide people to generate a Virtual ID because it allows verification without revealing the actual Aadhaar number.

Report Suspicious Activity Immediately report suspicious Aadhaar activity. If someone notices unusual authentication or receives unexpected OTP messages, I advise them to take it seriously and contact the relevant Aadhaar support services.

Secure Physical Documents Protect your Aadhaar documents at home. I often remind families to keep printed Aadhaar copies in a safe place because physical documents can also be misused if they fall into the wrong hands.

Beware Fake Update Calls Be cautious of calls claiming to update Aadhaar details. Fraudsters sometimes pretend they are helping with Aadhaar updates. I always remind people that updates should only be done through official Aadhaar channels.

Public Computers Risk Do not store Aadhaar images on public computers. When someone downloads their Aadhaar in a cyber café or office system, I advise them to delete the file immediately after use to prevent misuse.

Educate Your Family Educate your family members about Aadhaar safety. I always encourage people to explain these precautions to elderly parents and young family members because they are often the first targets of identity fraud attempts.
